I painted “What’s Inside” in a moment of pure creative surrender. No rules. No structure. Just layers of color, energy, and emotion pouring onto the canvas.
 
This piece is about the mystery of the internal world… the beauty, the chaos, the colors we hide and the ones we let out. You can feel the rawness in the strokes...the deep oranges and yellows pulling toward light, the darks holding memory, the bright lines of hope scribbled like electric thoughts on a wall.
 
It’s a painting that asks questions more than it gives answers. And that’s what makes it one of my favorites.
 
The original has sold, but the energy lives on in every inch of it.

The Process Behind the Work

Each artwork begins as an original painting by JD Shultz, created on canvas or plexiglass using layered acrylic techniques.

Plexiglass pieces are painted on the reverse side, building the image back-to-front to create depth, clarity, and a luminous finish.

​

Mixed media works are developed from the original painting and enhanced through layered materials and finishes — preserving the integrity of the original while adding dimension and presence.
